Pasture-raised is one of the most important terms that’s used on our products. So what does it really mean to us here at Southard Farms? Sunshine, fresh air, green forage, and regular movement are all requirements in our book to meet the definition of pasture-raised. This leads to no need for medications, antibiotics, or waste lagoons.
Our laying hens move regularly across the alfalfa fields with their mobile chicken house eating the green alfalfa and insects, fertilizing the field with their manure and using the fresh air and sunshine to stay healthy. Our broiler hens are moved daily across native grass hillsides that are too steep to plant crops on. They’re able to transform these normally unused areas through their manure byproduct into lush green areas of the farm which we can cut hay from or graze hogs across in the off season. This native grass and sunshine create the best tasting chicken. Our hogs are raised and rotated regularly in mixed forest and grass areas of the farm allowing them to be an omnivore like nature intended.
